Hallway painted with a Johnstone's grey paint colour

Grey paint colours aren’t the obvious choice for decorating a hallway. However, grey tones can make an effective addition to any entryway. A subtle shade of grey brings many of the same benefits as an off-white, bouncing around natural light and giving a small space the illusion of extra space.

While light greys are ideal for a narrow space, you can use a darker shade if you’re keen to experiment with more daring grey hallway ideas. Use a dark grey like charcoal to accent architectural details. Don’t have any? Use your grey of choice for a gallery wall instead.

There are also all manner of complementary and contrasting colour options. You can combine grey with subtle variations for a tonal interior, with warm greys working particularly well. Alternatively, make an impression with pops of neon yellow or burnt orange. If you want to create a more luxurious aesthetic, think about using blush pink jewel tones or greige

A grey scheme is a great choice if your home is more contemporary in nature. With a colour like Silent Smoke, you have the ideal starting point for an ultra-modern hallway interior. Infused with umber undertones, this hazy shade is closer to greige than classic grey, making it ideal if you’re eager to bring some luxury to your interiors.

You can use the same grey throughout your hallway, or mix things up with varying shades for a tonal finish. A dark grey can also prove effective as a backdrop for a feature wall. Of course, you’re not limited to greys. Jewel tones will work nicely alongside this greige, while more classic pairings like tan and taupe will also work well.

Some greys are more elegant than others. If you want to bring a feminine energy to your hallway, go with a grey hue that’s enriched with notes of purple. Rare Orchid is the perfect candidate, with this delicate purple-infused grey bringing the beauty of amethyst to the entrance of your home.

As this is a fairly delicate shade, it’s best to stick with subtle colours when creating your hallway scheme. Soft greys will look right at home alongside this shade, while warm-toned neutrals can also be used to make your space feel more inviting. When furnishing your hallway, go with honey-toned woods or take a more contemporary route with metallics.

Don’t be afraid of using cool tones to transform your hallway. While icy hues aren’t going to bring warmth to your interiors, they will help open things up and refresh tired-looking decor schemes. A shade like Pearly Dewdrop is a fabulous choice for any hallway, with this arctic blue ideal for making your space feel larger.

Keep things uncluttered by avoiding bulky pieces of furniture and distracting artwork. Instead, use minimalist console tables or wall-mounted displays that won’t swallow up much square footage. You’ll also want to moderate your use of accent colours. Anything with cooler undertones will work, so experiment with other shades of blue or grey. For a more luxurious aesthetic, consider using purple tones. Amethyst is a particularly good choice.

Like the idea of a grey hallway, but are worried that grey tones are going to leave your entrance feeling cold and uninviting to visitors? You just haven’t found the right shade of grey yet. With a paint colour like Shining Scale, you can transform your hallway without having to sacrifice warmth and intimacy.

This veiled grey is imbued with heather undertones, making it a softer, more appealing choice than other hues from the same colour family. It effortlessly pairs with warm tones like blush pink, while purple accents also work well. If you’re decorating a larger space, you can even introduce additional shades of grey for a contemporary take on tonal decorating.

Looking for a gorgeous grey shade that will leave your space feeling warm and welcoming? How about Misty Morning? This dusky grey has a unique quality that will transform any hallway. It’s decidedly warmer than many other greys in our selection, meaning you can use it liberally, even in a smaller space.

Choosing the right accent colours is crucial if you want to make the most of this grey. For a safe pairing, try something like greige or taupe. For a more playful aesthetic, go with blush pink. You can even use muted purples if you’re keen to create a more elegant atmosphere.

Some of the most enticing greys are infused with purple. Take Stone Rose as an example. Although it’s fairly light, this grey hue makes quite the impression. Infused with notes of lavender, it manages to make a statement and exude understated elegance at the same time. If you’re looking for the perfect shade of grey for a narrow hallway, you’ve found it.

As it’s fairly muted, you won’t run into any trouble when searching for colours to pair this grey with. Purples are the obvious choice of accent colour, but other warm shades like dusty pink can also be turned to. For a more luxurious hallway, consider using jewel tones. Thinking about using darker neutrals alongside this grey? Go with tan or taupe, then turn to soft furnishings with earthy textures.

A light grey is always a good shout in a smaller hallway. Offering the same properties as standard white, a softer shade will bounce light around and leave your space feeling bigger than it actually is. A mauve grey like Balanced is a good choice, with its subtle purple undertones making it a surprisingly warm colour option.

You can use this shade generously, even if your hallway is fairly tight and awkwardly proportioned. If you want to add more depth to your interior, think about using similar shades for a tonal effect. Dove grey will work particularly well alongside this paint colour, while a distinctive mauve is an excellent choice for a gallery wall backdrop.

Far from leaving your hallway feeling sterile, an ice-toned blue can have a revitalising effect on the entrance to your home. With a pale grey like Sea Frost, you can transform your hallway effortlessly. Infused with arctic blue undertones, it instantly refreshes an interior. What’s more, it’s very easy to work with.

It’s one of the best grey shades for a small entryway, making up for limited square footage. It’s also versatile, pairing well with other cool greys and blue tones alike. If you want to go in a more contemporary direction, you can even bring metallic shades into the mix.
