Living room painted with a Johnstone's emerald green paint colour

Emerald green is an interior design favourite. The perfect foundation for a more sophisticated palette, it’s an ideal addition to any living space, dining room or bedroom. Exuding all the elegance of an emerald gemstone, this shade will effortlessly enhance any space. However, finding the right paint colours to complement your colour scheme isn’t always straightforward.

Wondering what colour goes with emerald green? Instead of pairing this green shade with primary colours, consider other shades that are more understated. Combine emerald green with a jewel tone, or use blush pink as an accent colour for a more luxurious scheme. An emerald green colour can also work well with metallics like rose gold.

Both emerald and standard green can be combined with the same complementary colours, so you don’t have to stray too far on the colour wheel. If you want to make a statement, add a pop of burnt orange, navy blue or mustard yellow.

Neutral

Treasure Isle and Sea Of Tranquility

If you’re ready to embrace the luxurious qualities of emerald, make sure you’re starting with the right colour. With its mysterious qualities and aqua-green undertones, Treasure Isle is a great launching pad for an inspired colour scheme. More saturated than many other shades, it’s an ideal colour choice for a feature wall. It can also be used in spaces like dining rooms to create a sense of intimacy.

If you’re using this as a primary colour, you’ll need something to offset it and create balance. A sandy neutral paint colour like Sea Of Tranquility is a good idea. As the name suggests, it brings a sense of serenity to any interior, working well in place of standard white.

Drop of Jade and Singing Sand

Thinking about a rich and refined interior makeover? With Drop Of Jade, you can reimagine your favourite spaces with a glowing emerald green. Although this is a fairly dramatic colour choice, it’s fairly muted, making it ideal for big and small spaces alike.

If you want to use this liberally, make sure you’re using the right accent colour to bring a little balance to your interiors. Something like Singing Sand should work nicely. This pale taupe is a classic pairing for emerald and green shades in general. It’s also infused with some pink undertones, meaning it will add warmth to your colour scheme.

Bedroom painted with Johnstone's Evening Emerald and Peregrine

Grey

Carlisle and Misty Morning

Emerald paint colours are very effective at creating low-key interiors that will soothe and relax your soul. To realise this design in your home, start with a subdued emerald like Carlisle. This intense aqua-green has an unmistakable air of tranquillity about it. What’s more, it’s surprisingly easy to coordinate with.

If you want to keep things relaxed, it’s best to go with a muted grey when putting the finishing touches to your colour scheme. A dusky take on sandy grey like Misty Morning is a fine choice. You can use this and emerald in equal measures, or reserve this for all of those finishing touches you’d normally use white for.

Evening Emerald and Peregrine

Are you thinking about using a more intense shade of emerald to overhaul an interior? Whether it’s a living room makeover or a dining space spruce-up, a deep hue like Evening Emerald is a good option. With its grey and jade undertones, there’s plenty of depth here. What’s more, you’ve got the perfect starting point for selecting accent colours.

Taking your lead from those grey undertones, go with a cool-toned shade like Peregrine. Imbued with icy grey and blue undertones of its own, it’s the perfect companion to emerald. If you’re decorating a bathroom or space with limited dimensions, don’t be afraid of being generous with this one.

Living room painted with Johnstone's Emerald Pool and Platinum Medal

Blue

Emerald Pool and Platinum Medal

Emerald and cooler tones work very well together. This soothing combination is an ideal choice for bedrooms, but can also bring some tranquillity to hallways and transitional spaces. A colour like Emerald Pool provides you with a beautiful base for any decorating project. With notes of jade and aqua, it’s a more luxurious choice than many of our other emerald paint colours.

Although this shade works well with icy tones, make sure you’re choosing them wisely. A colour like Platinum Medal will prove very effective, with a precise balance of grey and blue bringing all the cooling qualities you need to pull this colour scheme off to perfection.

Plumosa and Tin Soldier

If you’re thinking of decorating with emerald green, you might as well go all out. A dramatic shade like Plumosa is a good starting point for any interior. Although this is a saturated hue, it’s also fairly muted. Nonetheless, its glowing quality makes it a welcome addition to any home and a beautiful basis for your next design makeover.

Creating a balanced colour scheme with this emerald requires some careful consideration. Go with a cool accent colour to make the most of this glorious green. A neutral blue like Tin Soldier is a good idea, with its arctic undertones refreshing any space.

Dining room painted with Johnstone's Parakeet Pete and Milk Round

Orange

Parakeet Pete and Milk Round

Orange might not seem like an obvious pairing with emerald. However, this citrus shade works exceptionally well with greens. Get things started with an airy take on emerald green like Parakeet Pete. Although it’s fairly light, it packs a real punch, while the blue undertones bring some added complexity.

You don’t want an accent colour that will dominate a paler emerald, so go with something like Milk Road when putting together your palette. This subdued taupe is infused with plenty of orange, while additional undertones of pink bring warmth.

Candy Twist and Possibility

Even the most muted emeralds can make quite the impression. Take Candy Twist as an example. It might be softer than some of our other green shades, but it has a glowing quality that’s hard to resist. Ideal for a smaller space, it can also be used alongside varying shades of emerald if tonal interiors are your thing.

Searching for the perfect orange accent? How about Possibility? This pale apricot has bags of orange character, while a subtle hint of cinnamon brings some understated heat to any colour scheme.
